Description
As an untitled work shown in the context of Egger's selection for the 2021 International Mokuhanga Conference juried exhibition in Nara, this print sits within the conference's framing theme of [sumi](/glossary/sumi) — the black water-based ink central to traditional Japanese woodblock practice. Without a descriptive title, the work resists narrative reading and directs attention toward the material conditions of mokuhanga itself: the absorbency of [washi](/glossary/washi), the pressure of the [baren](/glossary/baren), and the way carved relief surfaces hold and release pigment. Egger's participation in the IMC exhibition places this print among contemporary international mokuhanga produced outside Japan but rooted in Japanese technique, where Western printmakers have engaged with the medium as a vehicle for non-figurative composition. The untitled designation is consistent with conventions in contemporary fine-art mokuhanga, where artists frequently leave works unnamed to foreground formal and material concerns rather than tie a print to a place, season, or subject.
