Description
This untitled print accompanies Egger's participation in the 2021 International Mokuhanga Conference in Nara. The IMC, held triennially since 2011, functions as the principal gathering point for mokuhanga practitioners worldwide, and its juried exhibitions present a snapshot of how the medium is being practiced internationally at the time. By representing Austria in the 2021 cohort, Egger sits among artists working in a tradition that originated in Edo-period Japan but has, through the twentieth-century [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) and sōsaku-hanga movements and twenty-first-century international workshops, become a medium with practitioners across Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific. The absence of a title here is consistent with the fine-art framing of contemporary mokuhanga, where works are often presented with neutral designations to foreground formal, material, and process-based concerns over narrative or topographic content.
