Description

A four-block portrait printed on washi handmade by Living National Treasure papermaker Ichibei Iwano, known as Ichibei-san. The choice of this exceptionally fine, strong washi elevates the impression beyond most contemporary mokuhanga: Iwano's paper is made from pure kozo fiber and sized to accept water-based pigments with unusual consistency, enabling clean registration across all four blocks. The limited block count concentrates tonal description into carefully considered layers, each contributing to the construction of the subject's likeness. Lyon's CNC-carved blocks allow precise tonal gradations that the high-quality washi support renders with particular clarity, making the material collaboration between printer and papermaker central to the work's effect.
