Description
A four-block mokuhanga portrait on [washi](/glossary/washi), consistent with Lyon's series of intimate figurative studies. The title suggests a familiar or familial subject, in keeping with Lyon's practice of portraying people from his personal community. With four blocks, the tonal range is constructed economically: shadow, midtone, and highlight must each occupy a clear register, and the CNC-carved gradations within each block smooth the transitions between them. Washi receives the water-based pigments with a warmth and slight irregularity that distinguishes mokuhanga impressions from photomechanical reproduction, lending each print a handmade quality despite the technological precision of the block carving. The combination of digital tooling and traditional printing methods is central to Lyon's post-digital printmaking practice.
