Description
A sixteen-block mokuhanga portrait on [washi](/glossary/washi) representing one of the more tonally complex works in Lyon's figurative series. Sixteen cherry blocks allow for fine-grained tonal subdivision across the face and figure, with each block contributing a narrow tonal band that, in sequence, builds a near-continuous gradient from deep shadow to bright highlight. Lyon's CNC carving is particularly visible in works of this complexity: the carved gradations within each block produce subtle tonal ramps that register cleanly against adjacent layers on washi, creating the smooth photographic quality for which his portraits are known. Cherry wood is traditionally favored in both Japanese and Western woodblock printing for its tight, consistent grain, which holds fine carved detail without splitting or compressing under the [baren](/glossary/baren).
