This woodblock print explores the motif of twelve interlocking or overlapping rings, a geometric subject that Sora returns to across multiple works. The rings function as both formal abstraction and symbolic structure, suggesting cycles, connections, and the passage of time. Sora's mokuhanga technique, in which he carves and prints each block by hand, gives the rings a material presence that purely graphic or digital circles could never achieve. Variations in ink density, wood grain texture, and printing pressure mean that no two rings are identical, even when the carved form repeats. The composition arranges the twelve rings in a pattern that balances visual weight across the surface, creating a rhythm of overlaps and openings that rewards sustained attention.
12 Rings was created by Mitsuaki Sora (空充秋).
