Description
This print depicts children gathered around senko hanabi, the delicate sparkler fireworks made from twisted paper and black powder that produce a soft, cascading shower of sparks rather than the explosive burst of larger fireworks. Senko hanabi were a summer domestic ritual, typically enjoyed in the quiet of a garden or veranda. Shuntei likely renders the scene with warm, diffused color to capture the soft luminescence of the sparks against darkened surroundings, a compositional challenge well suited to nuanced [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation. The children's yukata and informal postures place this within [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga)'s domestic register extended to childhood subjects, a genre Shuntei practiced alongside his [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) series. The title's kana transcription suggests the print was intended for a broad audience familiar with this seasonal custom.
