Description
"Dolls Festival" (雛祭り, Hina Matsuri) depicts the third-day-of-the-third-month celebration when tiered displays of imperial court dolls were arranged in households with young daughters. The festival's visual richness — the multi-figured doll display with its specific hierarchy of imperial figures, musicians, and attendants; the seasonal decorations of peach blossoms and diamond-shaped rice cakes; the children who observed and participated — gave Shuntei one of his most elaborately social subjects, combining domestic ritual, seasonal celebration, and the specific aesthetic world of traditional dolls.
