"January" (其一 追羽子 — literally "the first, hanetsuki/battledore") from 1898 depicts the New Year's game of hanetsuki, in which players use decorated wooden paddles (hagoita) to keep a shuttle in the air, played traditionally by girls during the New Year season. The game had deep roots in Japanese New Year celebration, and Shuntei renders it with the animated energy of children (or young women) at play in the cold January air, the painted hagoita paddles themselves decorative objects as well as sports equipment.
