Description
"On the Boat" (舟中, shunchu) depicts a scene of boat travel or recreational boating — the specific experience of being on a river or coastal boat as either transportation or leisure. The boat as social space gave Shuntei a contained setting for the observation of female social interaction: the limited space of the deck or cabin, the relationship to the passing landscape, the specific quality of attention that boat travel encouraged. His boat subjects continued the long tradition of Japanese figure painting in marine and river settings.
