Description
"Play with the Dog" (1897) depicts children at play with a dog — the familiar scene of inter-species domestic play that Shuntei captured with his characteristic eye for the specific dynamics of the interaction: the children's engaged excitement, the dog's response (which might be playful eagerness, cautious tolerance, or game participation), the particular quality of a moment when human and animal attention were genuinely focused on each other. Animals in children's scenes gave Shuntei additional compositional energy and unpredictability.
