Description
"Taking Shelter From Rain" (雨宿り, amayadori) depicts the common yet universally recognizable scenario of sudden rainfall catching people outdoors and driving them to improvised shelter — a doorway, an overhanging eave, a shop awning. Shuntei renders this small drama of weather and response with characteristic attention to the human particulars: the specific postures of people waiting for the rain to pass, the relationship between the sheltering figures, the quality of the rainfall that forced this brief interruption of their activities. The amayadori scene combined the seasonal theme of rain with the social observation of strangers temporarily brought together.
