Description
A woman (or women) viewing a Japanese garden from the interior of a house — sitting at the edge of the engawa veranda or looking out through a screen door — in Shuntei's characteristic mode of indoor-outdoor interplay. The Japanese garden, designed to be experienced from specific viewing points within the adjacent architecture, offered him a subject combining the aesthetic appreciation of nature with the social customs of domestic life. The viewer and the garden are in a relationship of cultivated contemplation that Shuntei's composition presents as both aesthetic and social.
