Description
The sixth print extends a body of small-format etchings that Morisue has produced steadily since completing her MFA at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2009. Her subjects — small utensils, found scraps, common household items — are typical of a practice that gives sustained attention to what is usually overlooked. Etched line is the primary descriptive tool: closely worked passages render texture and weight, while open areas of paper allow each object to occupy its space without competition. The character of intaglio, in which the ink sits in slight relief on the surface of dampened paper, gives the printed image a tactile quality that suits Morisue's emphasis on the physical specificity of things. Gallery Hosokawa in Osaka, which has represented the artist for several years, has described her work as meticulously crafted and warm in tone. Inclusion in the 3rd PATinKyoto Print Art Triennale in 2022 placed Morisue alongside other contemporary Kyoto-based printmakers exploring similar small-scale, attentive print practices.
