Description
A diptych composition placing Oda's characteristic goddess figure within an aquatic setting — the pond (ike) as a zone of fertile, generative female energy, the water's surface both mirror and threshold between visible and invisible worlds. Mayumi Oda's water compositions draw on the Buddhist tradition of the lotus pond — the symbol of enlightenment rising from muddy water — while transforming it through her feminist vision into a space of specifically feminine creative power. The diptych format (two panels read as a continuous image) allows for the kind of expansive compositional gesture that Oda favors: the goddess figure extending across the full width of a double image, her physical presence filling the pictorial space with joyful abundance.
