Description
This impression from the Treasure Ship, Goddess of All Animals edition situates Oda's goddess iconography within the traditional Japanese takarabune motif, producing a work that is simultaneously celebratory and revisionary. Where conventional treasure ship imagery emphasizes material fortune and male divine authority, Oda's print centers a female goddess in relation to the animal world — framing the natural order, rather than accumulated wealth, as the true content of abundance. The woodblock medium is integral to this message: the hand-carved blocks, washi paper, and water-based pigments connect the work to Japanese craft traditions even as its imagery departs from those traditions' conventional gender arrangements. Edition eight of fifty reflects the careful production standards Oda maintained for her major print releases.
