The Beach at Kaiganji in Sanuki Province (Sanuki Kaiganji no hama), from the series "Collection of Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition (Nihon fukei shu II Kansai hen)"
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan series — Hasui's most extensive documented series, covering regional landscapes across the entire country. These prints document local sites that often saw little representation in earlier ukiyo-e, giving them documentary as well as artistic value. Snow scenes within this collection (like Saishoin Temple in the Snow, $3,000 at Artelino 2023) command significant premiums. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
The Beach at Kaiganji in Sanuki Province, from the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition published in 1934, depicts the shoreline at Kaiganji on the Seto Inland Sea coast of Shikoku — a beach near the temple town of the same name, where the calm inland sea's shallow waters and island-dotted horizon create a distinctly different coastal atmosphere from Hasui's Pacific or Sea of Japan subjects. The Inland Sea's mild light, protected from ocean swells, gave the beach at Kaiganji an almost lacustrine tranquility, and Hasui's composition likely captures this still, island-framed coastal scene.
