Description
Arrowroot (kuzu, Pueraria montana) is a vigorous climbing vine whose large trifoliate leaves, twisting tendrils, and purple flower racemes made it a distinctive subject within the [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) tradition. Gekko's print likely focuses on a section of vine in late summer or autumn growth, using the overlapping leaf masses to create a richly layered composition. The broad kuzu leaves allowed printmakers to demonstrate expertise in gradated color washing across large flat areas, while the curling tendrils and vine stems introduce calligraphic line. Kuzu carries poetic associations in Japanese literature — it appears in the Man'yōshū as one of the seven autumn grasses — lending the image cultural resonance beyond its botanical subject. The composition may extend to the full [oban](/glossary/oban) sheet to accommodate the plant's sprawling character.
