Description
The azalea—tsutsuji—blooms across Japan in late spring in masses of pink, red, and white, often found in temple gardens and mountain parks. Gekko's flower study would have applied his botanical precision to the characteristic form of the azalea cluster—the trumpeted individual flowers massed in rounded heads—likely paired with or juxtaposed against a woman in kimono whose color echoed or contrasted with the flowers' pink tones, a typical Meiji-era bijin-hana composition.
