Description
This bijin-ga pairs one or more female figures with chrysanthemums, a flower that carries deep symbolic weight in Japanese culture as an emblem of longevity, the imperial house, and autumn. Gekko was among the most prolific Meiji-era bijin-ga artists, and his female figures reflect the era's synthesis of Edo-period grace with Meiji modernity — women shown in elegant kimono but with hairstyles and accessories that signal contemporary fashion. The chrysanthemum, with its densely layered petals, challenged the woodblock carver to render complex organic forms through precise line work. Backgrounds likely employ soft bokashi gradations in seasonal colors. The pairing of beautiful women with specific flowers was a well-established compositional convention that Gekko revisited throughout his career in series and standalone prints.
