Description
This kacho-e depicts the begonia (shukaidō), a flowering plant with asymmetrical leaves and delicate pink or white blooms that appears frequently in Meiji-era botanical woodblock prints. The begonia's irregular leaf shape — one side noticeably larger than the other — was a distinctive formal element that gave printmakers and carvers an identifiable silhouette to exploit compositionally. Gekko would have used fine line carving to render the leaf veination and translucent petal quality of the blooms, with soft bokashi gradations in pink and green. Botanical kacho-e occupied a respected position in the broader canon of woodblock printmaking, and Gekko returned to flower subjects throughout his career. This standalone begonia print may relate to series work or have been published as an independent design.
