The Dancing Girl from the series Activities of Women—one of several series Gekko devoted to depicting women engaged in specific pursuits—shows a figure in the controlled, formalized movements of Japanese traditional dance. Whether a maiko performing in the context of the Gion festival or a dancer in a private entertainment setting, the dancing figure allowed him to depict the human body in expressive motion while maintaining the decorative surface that defined bijin-ga.
