Description
A hanaguruma (flower carriage) print likely depicts an ox-drawn court carriage (gissha) adorned with seasonal blossoms, a subject drawn from Heian court culture and frequently reimagined during the Meiji period as a marker of elegant classical precedent. The composition may feature a procession scene with attendants or a static arrangement in which the ornate carriage fills the picture plane, its lacquered panels and floral decorations rendered with fine keyblock detail and layered color printing. Gekko's facility with decorative patterning — evident in his textile and costume work in the bijin-ga genre — would be well suited to the intricate surface of a formal court vehicle. The subject bridges history painting and decorative composition.
