The pairing of a flower vendor with a woman who arranges flowers—the one who grows or sells, the one who creates with them—offered Gekko a subject that combined everyday Meiji-era commerce with the refined aesthetic practice of ikebana. The two women in visual dialogue across their shared subject—flowers as livelihood and flowers as art—gave him a composition of social observation more nuanced than single-figure bijin-ga, suggesting the broader social world in which both figures moved.
