Description
The Kameido plum garden—famous for its spreading, gnarled old plum trees trained over ponds and trellises in the eastern districts of Edo/Tokyo—was a traditional scenic subject that the Meiji-era artists updated with new compositional approaches. Gekko's 1895 Garyobai (crouching dragon plum) print focuses on the famous ancient tree at Kameido whose trunk, trained horizontally over the water, had earned the dragon comparison for its serpentine form.
