Description

This Gekko Zuihitsu print depicts 縫乃工 呉織穴織—Kure-ori (呉織) and Ana-ori (穴織), legendary weavers who appear in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan). According to these chronicles, these craftswomen traveled from the kingdom of Wu (呉, Kure) to Japan in the late Kofun period, bringing advanced silk-weaving techniques that transformed Japanese textile production. Their arrival represents the transmission of continental craft knowledge to the Japanese islands—a theme consonant with Meiji-era scholarly interest in Japan's cultural heritage and its relationship to the continent. Gekko likely depicts the two women at a loom or engaged in thread preparation, dressed in Chinese-style garments appropriate to their continental origin. The subject demonstrates the historical depth of the Gekko Zuihitsu series, extending beyond the conventional warrior and court literary subjects to the craftswomen whose technical knowledge underpinned Japanese material culture, and reflecting Gekko's characteristic ambition to encompass the full breadth of Japanese historical tradition.
