Description
The Gekko Zuihitsu series (月耕随筆) drew freely from Gekko's wide repertoire, including figures from Chinese history and literary tradition. The title 東中君 likely identifies a specific historical or literary figure from Chinese or Sino-Japanese culture—possibly a character from a classical text that circulated widely in Meiji Japan, such as the Shiji or a popular dramatization of continental history. Gekko's Kano-school training gave him facility with Chinese-style figure representation, including appropriate dress, setting, and compositional conventions derived from continental ink painting. The figure is likely rendered in period Chinese-influenced robes against a landscape or interior setting, with Gekko's characteristic attention to surface pattern and decorative detail balanced against volumetric figure drawing. The Gekko Zuihitsu series, published in installments, served as a showcase for this breadth of cultural reference, presenting Gekko as an artist conversant with both Japanese and continental literary and historical traditions.
