Description

This print from the Gekko zuihitsu series depicts the legend of the swordsmith Sanjo Munechika, commissioned by Emperor Ichijo to forge a blade and aided by the fox spirit of Fushimi Inari shrine. The kitsune manifests as a supernatural assistant at the forge, the scene combining a craftsman's working environment with the uncanny presence of a kami. Gekko zuihitsu — Miscellaneous Drawings by Gekko — was a compilation series in which Ogata Gekko drew on literary, legendary, and historical subjects in a fluid, sketch-informed style that distinguishes itself from the harder graphic outlines of theatrical or heroic print traditions. The Kokaji legend was also staged as a Noh play, and Gekko's compositional choices may reflect theatrical conventions for staging the divine encounter — a contrast between the heat and material darkness of the smithy and the luminous, otherworldly quality of the fox spirit's manifestation. The Inari shrine setting connects the legend to the Fushimi Inari complex south of Kyoto, one of Japan's most prominent fox-deity worship sites.
