Description

This print belongs to Gekko's Gekko Zuihitsu series, a major compilation of miscellaneous subjects published across multiple volumes. The subtitle Kajin warabitsumi — beautiful women gathering bracken shoots — places the image within a pastoral bijin-ga tradition depicting court ladies or elegant women engaged in seasonal activities in the countryside. Bracken gathering is associated with early spring in classical Japanese poetry. The composition likely shows one or several women bending among low vegetation, their robes and sashes rendered with careful color gradation through multiple woodblock passes. The Gekko Zuihitsu series was among the most ambitious publishing projects of his career, grouping diverse subjects under a single editorial framework that displayed the full range of his technical and compositional abilities.
