Description

A standing samurai in a black kimono with bold yellow diagonal stripes and a green under-robe patterned with white swirls looks down at a seated companion in an orange kimono decorated with a swirling gold motif and a purple under-layer; both wear their hair in topknots, and the seated figure holds a fishing net or line over the water's edge. They are positioned on a rocky bank beside a river or pond fringed with tall grasses, beneath a pale tan sky where two birds fly in the upper left. The palette is soft and muted—dusty tans, sage green, and warm gray water—with a title cartouche and inscription in the upper right; this woodblock print, "Kanzaki Yogoro Noriyasu" by Ogata Gekko, dates to 1902.
