Description

This print depicts Katsuta Shinzaemon Taketaka, one of the younger members of the forty-seven ronin group, from Gekko's Gishi Shijushichi Zu series. Katsuta was in his mid-twenties at the time of the 1703 Kira raid and is typically portrayed as one of the more physically active participants in the assault. The portrait format places him in the warrior dress and equipment appropriate to his role, with a name cartouche identifying him within the larger series. Gekko's complete documentation of all forty-seven retainers as individual prints represents a significant artistic and commercial undertaking, producing a coherent portrait gallery of historical loyalty that spoke directly to Meiji-era audiences invested in bushido as a cultural ideal.
