Description
Koganei, a locality along the Tamagawa Aqueduct in western Tokyo, was celebrated for its rows of cherry trees lining the waterway, making it a popular hanami destination in the Meiji period. This meisho-e print likely depicts the blossoming embankment with figures of viewers beneath the canopy of sakura, employing a lateral composition that allows the eye to move through the scene along the water's edge. Graduated bokashi washes in the sky, moving from pale warmth at the horizon to a deeper blue above, were standard atmospheric devices in landscape prints of this type. Gekko's color palette for such seasonal subjects characteristically balanced the delicate pink of blossoms against the subdued tones of early spring foliage and the reflective surface of the aqueduct.
