Description

Robed Buddhist monks and priests gather in an interior room, their gray-green and pale robes marked with pale rectangular emblems on the back; one bald elder in a lavender-blue robe stands apart near a sliding door through which a seated woman in a patterned kimono is visible. A low table draped in red cloth bearing a wave design holds a ceramic vase of white lotus blossoms, a covered jar, and a tiered stand, beneath a lavender curtain gathered at the top of the scene. Muted sage, dusty rose, indigo, and vermillion tones fill the composition, with columns of Japanese calligraphy at upper left and a title cartouche in orange and cream; the work is Ogata Gekko's "Minori," a woodblock print from 1893.
