Description
This print depicts Otaka Gengo Tadao (1672–1703), one of the forty-seven ronin who avenged the death of their lord Asano Naganori in 1703. A retainer of some literary cultivation, Otaka was also a haiku poet who used that connection to infiltrate Kira Yoshinaka's circle as a spy. Gekko likely renders him in full armor or formal kamishimo, as was conventional in heroic warrior portraiture of the Meiji period. The composition would emphasize his resolve through facial expression and upright bearing. Printed on washi in oban format, such single-sheet warrior portraits were popular collector items during the Meiji era, when the Chushingura vendetta enjoyed renewed cultural prestige as an emblem of loyalty and sacrifice.
