Description
This print is one of at least three related compositions by Gekko depicting a Japanese reconnaissance unit advancing against enemy positions during the Sino-Japanese War (1894–95). Scout patrol prints were a distinct subgenre within Meiji war reportage, emphasizing small-unit courage rather than grand fleet or army engagements. Gekko likely shows soldiers in modern Meiji military uniform moving through difficult terrain — wooded hills, river crossings, or open fields — with rifles raised and formation broken into individual fighting postures. The composition may employ diagonal recession to convey forward momentum. As with most Sino-Japanese War prints, the palette is likely keyed to blue-green landscapes and red-orange gunfire or flag accents, printed with bokashi gradations in the sky register.
