Description

A third compositional variant in Gekko's series of prints on the fall of Port Arthur (November 1894), this work approaches the same historical event from a different visual angle. The existence of multiple versions on a single subject reflects both the scale of public appetite for Sino-Japanese War imagery and the competitive print market in which publishers commissioned rapid variations on successful subjects. This variant may shift emphasis to a different phase of the engagement — the naval bombardment, the infantry assault on the forts, or the formal capitulation — or may offer an alternate vantage point on the harbor landscape. Gekko's characteristic treatment of Meiji military subjects combines accurate uniform and equipment detail with dynamic compositional energy derived from earlier ukiyo-e warrior-print traditions.
