Description

The Pilgrimage to Enoshima—the island shrine in Sagami Bay associated with Benzaiten, goddess of music, eloquence, and fortune—was one of the great popular religious journeys of Edo and Meiji Japan, a day trip from Tokyo that combined scenic landscape, sea air, religious merit, and festive commerce. Gekko's pilgrimage scene would have depicted the crowds on the causeway approach, the island's distinctive silhouette, and the atmosphere of popular devotion mixed with holiday pleasure.
