Description
Rikiya is the son of Oboshi Yuranosuke (the fictional counterpart of Oishi Kuranosuke) in the Chushingura dramatization of the forty-seven ronin vendetta, and this print is almost certainly a character portrait from Gekko's engagement with that narrative. Rikiya appears in the play as a young, loyal samurai torn between filial duty and devotion to his lord's cause. Gekko likely rendered him in formal kamishimo or battle dress, his youthful bearing contrasted with a composed expression suggesting martial resolve. The Chushingura subject was inexhaustibly popular across Edo and Meiji print culture, and Gekko contributed to it through multiple series. Pigment handling in such warrior portraits typically favored deep indigo and charcoal blacks for garments, with precise line work describing armor fittings and family crests.
