Description

A historical narrative print (rekishi-e) depicting Toyotomi Hideyoshi confronting Akechi Mitsuhide, the general who assassinated Oda Nobunaga at Honnō-ji in 1582. The scene captures a moment from the Battle of Yamazaki, in which Hideyoshi avenged his lord and consolidated his own path to national hegemony. Gekko renders the figures in elaborate yoroi armor with attention to crested kabuto helmets, sashimono battle banners, and the textile patterns of late Sengoku-era costume. Such historical prints typically use bold black keyblock outlines with measured color fields rather than the soft bokashi of landscape work, prioritizing narrative legibility. The composition would arrange the two principals in confrontational diagonal across the sheet, with retainers receding behind. Gekko produced extensive series of historical Japanese subjects throughout the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on the Meiji-era interest in domestic history as a counterweight to rapid Western influence on visual culture.
