This print presents an unusual conceit: the silhouette of Mount Fuji captured within the falling sheet of a waterfall, likely rendered through the soft tonal gradations of [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) printing to suggest the diffusion of light through cascading water. The composition belongs to the [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) tradition of celebrated places, but Gekko approaches the subject with the inventive framing characteristic of his Meiji-era output rather than the topographic clarity of earlier Hokusai or Hiroshige treatments of Fuji. The vertical format would suit the downward pull of the water, while the integration of the distant mountain into the foreground waterscape demonstrates Gekko's interest in spatial play. Such Fuji studies sit within his broader engagement with landscape, a category he pursued alongside the warrior prints, [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga), and historical scenes that defined his prolific career. As a largely self-taught artist working outside the established lineages, Gekko frequently varied compositional convention, and the doubling of Fuji through reflection here typifies that independent visual sensibility.
