Description

This print, part of a series, takes as its subject three streams — likely the convergence or parallel flow of watercourses descending through a hillside, garden, or mountain landscape. The compositional possibilities of such a subject are considerable: divergent diagonals across the sheet, contrasting passages of fast and still water, and the use of bokashi gradation to render foam and depth. Water is among the most demanding subjects in mokuhanga because it requires the printer to coordinate flat color blocks with pulled, graded impressions in a way that suggests movement without losing the linear discipline of the design. Gekko's landscape prints generally favor lyrical, atmospheric treatments over the precise topographical record, and a multi-stream composition would suit his interest in patterning natural forms across the picture plane. The work belongs to the broader category of Meiji landscape prints that adapted earlier Edo conventions to contemporary tastes, often through more naturalistic palettes and softer keyblock impressions.
