Description
From the Gekko zuihitsu (Gekko's Miscellany) series, one of the artist's most ambitious publishing projects, this print takes its title from Seki no to, a barrier gate that appears in classical poetry and Noh theater as a symbol of thresholds, partings, and the passage of time. The Gekko zuihitsu series encompassed a wide range of subjects drawn from classical literature, history, and legend, allowing Gekko to demonstrate his versatility across genres. A print titled Seki no to would likely depict the gate in a night or twilight setting, possibly with a solitary figure — the barrier keeper of the Noh play Seki-dera Komachi, or a traveler pausing at the gate. The zuihitsu format, meaning miscellaneous essays or notes, signals the series' breadth and Gekko's personal selection of subjects. Printing quality in the Gekko zuihitsu series was consistently high, with careful registration and nuanced bokashi.
