Description
This naval sensō-e documents a Japanese fleet action in the waters off Takushan (Daikosan) on the Bohai Gulf coastline, where the Imperial Japanese Navy conducted operations supporting the army's advance along the Liaodong coast. Naval prints constituted a distinct and demanding category within war-print publishing: unlike land engagements with their figure-dominated compositions, maritime battles required convincing depiction of ships, sea states, smoke plumes, and the scale relationships between vessels. Gekko depicts Japanese warships in action—likely showing shell bursts, gun smoke, and damaged or sinking Chinese vessels—employing the full range of Meiji woodblock technique to render water surfaces through carefully registered color gradations. The contrast between the gray-blue sea, white smoke, and the dark hulls of steam-powered ironclads offered colorists and carvers an opportunity to demonstrate technical range. Naval prints were among the most eagerly purchased sensō-e throughout 1894–95, as the destruction of the Beiyang Fleet represented the most dramatic dimension of Japanese military superiority.
