Description
A variant composition to the first Sparrow's Dance print, this kacho-e likely offers a different arrangement of the same subject — sparrows shown in lively movement — possibly depicting more birds, a different viewing angle, or an alternate seasonal setting. Gekko frequently produced paired or companion prints within a single subject to offer collectors complementary perspectives. The two prints together would have formed a balanced decorative set, each exploring different aspects of the sparrows' characteristic energy. Technical elements such as fine-line carving to render individual feathers, subtle gradations through bokashi to render sky or earth tones, and precise registration across multiple woodblocks would have been central to both compositions. In the Meiji market, kacho-e of small birds attracted broad audiences across both traditional print buyers and the new urban consumer class.
