Description

This surimono is a privately commissioned or limited-edition print of the kind produced for poetry clubs, New Year exchanges, or celebratory occasions rather than commercial distribution. Surimono characteristically employ premium materials and techniques unavailable in mass-market nishiki-e: metallic pigments such as kindei (gold dust) and gindei (silver dust), karazuri (blind embossing) to create tactile surface texture, and kirazuri (mica dusting) for luminous effects. Compositions typically combine a pictorial motif — natural subject, scene, still-life — with one or more verse inscriptions identifying the poetic occasion. Gekko, who was closely involved with haiku and kyoka poetry circles throughout his career, produced numerous surimono. The small, square or fan-shaped format concentrates technical virtuosity into a condensed space, and the prestige print's washi support would have been of noticeably higher quality than standard commercial sheet goods.
