Description
The 1891 Tea Gathering depicts the social ceremony of tea in the context of a group gathering rather than the intimate one-on-one or small-group chaji formalized tea encounter. The tea party as social occasion—multiple participants in a garden or large tea room—gave Gekko a subject that combined the aesthetic trappings of the tea ceremony with the social energy of a gathering, the careful arrangement of kimono-clad figures in a tea garden offering him a complex group composition.
