Description
The third print in this Fenghuangcheng series continues Gekko's documentary approach to the First Sino-Japanese War, likely presenting yet another vantage on the October 1894 battle for the Liaodong city. Across multi-sheet war print series, Gekko and his publishers exploited the compositional possibilities of sequential imagery: earlier sheets often established geography and troop movements while later ones focused on pivotal moments of attack or collapse. This print may emphasize the aftermath of the engagement or a specific assault on the city walls. Gekko's sensō-e were distinguished by relatively accurate renderings of Meiji-era military equipment—Murata rifles, Western-style uniforms, artillery—which lent these prints a topical credibility that older warrior print formats could not provide. They circulated widely as both journalistic record and nationalistic spectacle.
