Description
This second Ogata Gekko print sharing the dual title 'Toyotomi Hideyoshi or Ronin Yagoshira Ueshichi' is likely a companion sheet to the first, possibly forming a diptych or variant composition showing the same ambiguous figure in a different pose or setting. Gekko (1859–1920) frequently issued prints in paired or triptych formats, and historical-dramatic subjects suited multi-sheet narrative sequences. In multi-sheet Meiji compositions, each panel was printed individually using separately carved color blocks, and Gekko's figure work made full use of the polychrome nishiki-e palette for costume surfaces — layering pigments to render the visual richness of brocade weave, lacquered armor, and fine silk. The uncertain identification may reflect the Meiji practice of issuing prints that functioned simultaneously as historical commemoration and theatrical allusion, appealing to audiences familiar with both kabuki performance and popular histories of the Sengoku period.
