Description
Ogata Gekko (1859–1920) was a Meiji-era artist whose bijin-ga and nature prints bridged the ukiyo-e tradition and the eclectic Meiji-period absorption of Western and Chinese pictorial conventions. This print depicts two women in formal kimono observing chrysanthemums in bloom, a subject placing the scene in autumn, chrysanthemum being one of the four classical gentlemen's flowers and the emblem of the imperial household. The women's kimono patterns and hairstyles would allow a more precise Meiji date to be established from costume evidence. Their poses, turned toward the flowers rather than the viewer, follow a bijin-ga convention of depicting women absorbed in aesthetic contemplation, a compositional strategy that creates a secondary subject, the chrysanthemums, as the object of both artistic and figured attention. Gekko's palette likely combines warm ochre, crimson, and gold of autumn kiku blossoms against pale ground. The format is probably a standard oban vertical, suited to the depiction of standing or kneeling figures alongside tall-stemmed chrysanthemum clusters in a garden setting.
