Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) worked across a broad range of subjects during the Meiji era, producing bijin-ga, kacho-e, historical narrative prints, and nature studies that drew on both traditional ukiyo-e conventions and the Western-influenced currents flowing through Japanese art during the late nineteenth century. Without a surviving title or visual record, this print may represent any of those categories. Gekko was particularly noted for compositions combining elegant figural work with natural settings, and his kacho-e compositions often placed birds or blossoms against minimally rendered backgrounds to concentrate attention on the primary subject. His line work was typically precise, and his palette tended toward the refined, muted tones favored in Meiji-era printmaking as opposed to the high-contrast, saturated colors of earlier ukiyo-e traditions.
